Putting Personal Commitment into Action: VES Supports Disabled Veterans at Annual DAV Community Impact Day

At Veterans Evaluation Services (VES), a commitment to serving Veterans, caregivers, and their families guides our work and inspires active involvement in the communities in which we live. In mobilizing that commitment, our dedicated teams across Maximus and Veterans Evaluation Services (VES) participated recently in the annual DAV Community Impact Day.

The Disabled American Veterans (DAV) call to action mobilizes volunteers nationwide to give back to Veterans, service members, and their families in communities across the United States.

The event was a natural extension of our work to support Veterans through the delivery of critical health services, and reflects our team’s enduring commitment to those who have served.

The promise we keep

Oscar Olguin, assistant national voluntary services director for DAV, captured the spirit of Community Impact Day in a message that resonated across VES:

“Keeping the promise to America’s Veterans can start with you right in your community. Maximus and VES have proven this by helping Veterans in various communities during our Community Impact Day. No matter who you are or how you choose to help, you can stand by America’s Veterans. There are so many ways to volunteer and support those who have sacrificed so much.”

A month of service across the nation

VES team members participated in a wide range of volunteer activities individually, with their families, and alongside local Veteran Service Organizations (VSOs). Volunteers painted homes and delivered meals for disabled and elderly Veterans, provided grocery runs for those who couldn’t make it to the store, and served on Honor Guards at military funerals. Others helped distribute food and supplies to Veteran families, offered VA disability filing assistance, and participated in flag retirement ceremonies that honor those who have served.

We are proud to offer acts of service—large and small—to stand behind the Veteran community in addition to the critical health services we provide in partnership with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Stories from the field

The impact of Community Impact Day is best told through the people who made it a success. Here are just a few voices from VES team members who gave back this April:

Niki Colwell

“I am a member of the DAV, so I volunteer regularly. I attend funerals as a part of the Honor Guard for Veterans. I also help to find new ways to raise money so that we can continue to assist our local Veterans and their families. We are always looking for volunteers and new members.”

Maverick Mears

“It was on Easter weekend, so we put together candy bags for children, and also organized food to build supply crates for families in need, depending on family size. Various Veteran Service Officers were also offering VA disability filing assistance. It was a great experience overall, and as a Veteran, it was nice interacting with other Veterans.”

Shandiece Sharp

“I volunteer with American Legion Post 29 weekly. On March 13, 2026, I helped host a flag-burning ceremony—held a few times each year to respectfully and properly dispose of American flags that are worn, damaged, or no longer fit for display. Participating in this ceremony reinforced the importance of service, respect, and community, and it was an experience I found both humbling and impactful.”

Tanya Jacobs

I volunteer regularly for the Tioga County Veterans Affairs, delivering meals to disabled and elderly Vets. I also picked up some additional volunteer time to do grocery shopping for Vets who can’t go to the stores themselves.”

“At Maximus and Veterans Evaluation Services, we share a commitment to Veterans, caregivers, and their families. We are proud to honor those who have served our nation through our ongoing support of the mission of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and hands on acts of service large and small that put our gratitude into meaningful action.” – Tony De Falco, Senior Director, Internation Operations and Stakeholder Engagement, DAV Community Impact Day Sponsor, VES
